kumvana Gomani was born in Toronto and raised in Malawi the warm heart of Africa. Being the daughter of a Malawian father and an Canadian mother, she grew up and was educated in both countries. After her studies at Emily Carr Institute of Art and design, in Vancouver Cananda in  Industrial Design.  She continued her studies in Interior design at B.C.I.T. in Interior design department. In 2001 Kumvana started working in the Film and Televsion Industry designing enviroments/ Graphic illustrations. The client list is long and varied, including companies such as SONY Films, MERIMAX Studios, Lions Gates Studio, Martian child ,ShowTime, Scary Movie 3, Freddy Vrs Jason, The L-Word, Reefer Madness, The Fog and Battle Star Galatica.  In 2007 Kumvana moved to Sweden and set up her own studio in 2008, from where she has worked independently since. Involved in products of accessory design and interior design projects as well. With a strong focus on sustainability/fair trade porjects, workshops and consulting work. Kumvana gomani works in a playful and experimental process and gently twisting not only every day objects and situations, but also materials and manufacturing processes in new directions. The combination of African rationalism and femininity, and perhaps her dual nationality, give the works of Kumvana Gomani an unusual edge. Illustrating contrasts seem to be an issue, that keeps returning in her work. Black Mada necklace 2009, produced by kumvana gomani, combines a very personal expression with tradional manufacturing methods. Kumvana gomani Studio is also known for its interest in less commercial activities.

preferred subject is presentation of contemporary crafts, Kumvana Gomani has taken part in numerous activities aiming at improving the design and the environment. Among these initiatives is Abuntu at work, a collaboration trainging women in the slums of Bangalori India about, creating accessories out of everyday rubbish.


There are a few ground rules the studio aims to abide by: Always start fromscratch. Everything is possible until the opposite has been proven. Theremust be a good reason for every single decision made.

Current commissions include design of reclaimed bags/lac wear accessories/ sustainable enviroments.
